Ashed, 2015

Digital documentation of the burning of Nepalese Lokta paper with incense, in wooden embroidery hoops.

The process offers an opportunity to methodically obliterate both distraction and material. The process and product yielded mirror the behavior and consequences of smoking without an ashtray. To have an ashtray is to admit to smoking. In forgoing the ashtray, ones life will instead be filled with the aftermath of the vice, with no tools for controlling or containing it.

As an art object, it acts parasitically in that it has tension and power only when it has a host, and flattens when at rest.

Hog gut casing, steel, walnut shell.

DCAPBTLS is a physical assessment of damage which is concurrent with an attempt to stop it's progress. Stabilization preserves the parts in whatever state best prepares them for treatment later. Assessment and stabilization are fundamentally separate from treatment. Treatment attempts to resolve the problem as a whole, whereas stabilization guarantees nothing but continued presence in the moment.
